Monster Pig : Minor Conversion

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

I had never searched the word ‘hogzilla‘ until about 3 minutes ago when I found out that he had fallen to number 2.

Monster Pig reigns supreme.

Captivated by Jamison’s victory hunt, I knew the full color autographed poster would have to be mine. Jamison’s dad had registered his domain with Godaddy, so their fast shopping cart was an obvious choice for e-commerce. He just wants to share his boi’s triumph in 11 x 17 color!

Quick, easy & accessible right?

Things could have gone better…

  1. It was ugly and clunky looking. I don’t trust that.
  2. I put my Paypal information in the login page 2 times before realizing the text stating I didn’t have to login to the store. My mood drops thinking I’d been phished again .
  3. I entered my billing information only to be told that my Canadian postal code was invalid. WHAT?!

Had I not been carrying the momentum of Jamison’s courageous kill with me as I made my payment I may not taken the shot. Channeling MacGuyver episodes gone by I used the only American postal code I know, 90210, and put my explanation in the “special comments”.

It’s unfortunate that the most accessible tools purchase are often the least accessible to use.

I’m left wondering about my poster and waiting; dreaming of the day I land that 11 footer lurking the Manitoba praries.

Souls sell, but who’s buying? Quest for online advertising.

My blog looks so bare, where’s all the ads? As a user I’m sure you’re thinking “Am I on the internet?”

Since ads make the world go round, I’ve decided to help keep your online experience consistent and find an ad company to push “relevant contextual advertising” to you, the viewer. The search begins!

You’re welcome :)

Me = Phished on Myspace

  1. Friend Posts Bulletin
  2. I think “whoa! pics from her crazy vacation…” I click link.
    Timed out session?
  3. I type in my login info and press ‘enter’
  4. Where’s the pictures man?
Then I notice the red text saying check the URL in the address bar.

Netted and clubbed. Left to swear, laugh out loud and quickly go change my password.

Rapids in the Clickstream - Not a morning person

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

I was looking for an inspiring background using the TPC method:

  1. Type keyword.
  2. Press ‘images’
  3. Choose Killer Background.

Where’s the images button?

Buttons? On the left?

That’s not how it works!

Dear Google,

I am an avid user of your service and now I’m skewing the A/B page test results by blogging instead of searching! The stream is drying up! the ads are getting cold! the design is no good!

oh wait…

Google stock is over $460/share.

This IS NOT a bubble people.

I’m going to go AJAX my mouth for speculating and lay down for a bit.

Motion Graphics is the New Search

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Mitchell Baker (CEO of firefox) gave a good interview over at APC. Seems Microsoft isn’t the only company looking at breaking the stranglehold that Flash has on motion graphics.

The “Cairo” project, possibly included in the next Firefox browser release, will handle 2D stage based motion graphics. Ya know, like FLASH.

This can’t be good news if you work at Microsoft. First, you show up 10 years too late (i’m talking to you Silverlight), then these open source hippies try to trump you. Mitchel pointed out that they were aiming to open a motion graphics format that was non-proprietary and indexable by search engines.

Strike one up for the hippies! By packaging the rendering engine (i.e. Cairo) with the browser, Firefox will be set to out pace Microsoft in no time.

Internet Branding Crisis

Friday, May 11th, 2007

So …we’re going through an identity crisis at work. It seems people don’t quite understand what it is manlab does.

In our quest to find out who we are, we got web 2.0 with a survey, I’ve re-read my responses (from my sent box) and decided to post them, as I didn’t write anything for the blog today. Judge me as you will, here’s the Q &:

In 5 words or less…what is Manlab?

Good people doing great work.

As a company, what would you say Manlab values?

- quality work – intuitive answers through technology

- relationship with our clients – we bring them into the ‘family’. It’s not all business, we care about the people as much as we care about their projects.

If Manlab has the potential to be the greatest in the world at something what would that something be?

Geekery worth using. Or ski jumping. We might be versatile enough to be good at both.

When friends ask, you tell them you work at Manlab because….?

Most of my friends quit asking me about my job when I couldn’t answer their “Hey…you work on computers, right?” questions.

But I’m good at the internet I was lucky enough to be asked to work here.

Fill in the blanks. If Manlab were a guy at a party he would talk incessantly about [blank]. He would drink [blank]. He would be the guy that [blank]. You can elaborate if you like.

First off, why is Manlab a guy? But “if” he was…

He would have enough knowledge to talk incessantly about a lot of things so it would depend on the party’s crowd. He would also step back and listen to what you had to say.

He would probably drink light beer or white wine if it was a good night to socialize and he had a designated driver. Otherwise we’d be looking at bottled water or maybe a juice.

He’d be that guy that made you laugh and told you something you didn’t know before you talked to him. He might even give you his card and ask for your number, but it wouldn’t be creepy, you’d hope he called.

What is the best part about your job?
The people I work with and the flexibility to do my own thing while working towards greater internet goodness. The coffee is usually pretty good too!

What are you most passionate about at work?
Search marketing, web stats, automation, what’s gonna happen’ next on the wild web and how we can harness it for practical use.

Enforcing Try New Things Thursday’s.

What are your most passionate about outside of work?
Music. All types from all people happening everywhere.

If I gave you $10,000 tomorrow and you had to spend it on something fun what would you buy?

I wouldn’t buy anything.

I would throw a party.

Location depending on the time of year, theme devised and bands I wanted to play. It would be an eclectic bill and there would be free drinks and vegetarian food. It might be good to have it on a Thursday to ease the terror in the cold cut crowd.

Though I’m thinking that would take care of the cash pretty quick any remaining money could be used for fireworks.

Tell me about your best day you remember at work. What made it great?

I haven’t had my best day at work yet. I hope to never have it or might quit coming.

However, good days have been known to include some good laughs and ice cream. Seeing things we’ve never done before come to fruition is always satisfying. Even if I wasn’t directly involved with a project it’s nice to see the company push out into new territory.

What are you most proud of?

I’ve felt proud when hosting dinners for friends or playing music the way it was intended to be played but to carry those feelings through a day to day routine would probably result in me being conceited. I have a tendency to get lost in things.

Actually let’s simplify.

My kids.

If Life Were Like the Internet…

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007
  1. I would have abandon my shopping cart (3 times!)
  2. I would have seen one of my 120 friends
  3. There would have been a lot more “ooooh” services to enrich my experience

YouTube, Joost, Google….c’mon i know there’s more! think catchy web 2.0 services for the twenty somethings. antisooocial.com?

In Sound Guy News
Great Aunt Ida threw down some tight unplugged poppiness last night and Chords of Canada (where’ the music link?) masterminded the acoustic loop station.

What are friends good for anyway?

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

So I finally got around to starting a facebook account. I’ve spent the last week re-making the “friends” I had on other social networks that are no longer web 2.0 enough for use.

It’s also opened the door for asinine back and forths with people I would avoid on the street. G R E A T.

When is somebody going to make anti-social networking?

I probably shouldn’t give away the gold like that, but since it’s out of the bag here’s some details I just thought up.

All uploaded pictures with people in them should automatically have corpse paint added to the faces. Also, people with more than 3 friends in their hometown network get their profiles deleted for being a poseur. We just need a name…I’m open to suggestions here…anyone?

Do people even read this?

Farewell Choke - Rock ‘n Roll

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

Sure I spend all day working online, feasting on the latest Yahoo purchase or Google gossip …Microsoft? hello? are ya gonna do something?

Anyways, I also moonlight as a sound guy (or sound technician if you want to get fancy about it). I did my time at Recording Arts Canada and have been lucky enough to find work filling in at the various venues Winnipeg offers up for bands to blast out rock ‘n roll.

I promised myself I would keep this blog on topic (internet, SEO, blah) but tonight I had the pleasure of working with Choke on their final Canadian tour. My history with this band goes all the way back to 11th grade when I listened to Needless to Say on headphones instead of paying attention in class.

They played a full set, complete with encore, and they didn’t shy away from the songs that brought them to where they are. The whole catalog was there.

They are not rock superstar’s, but they’re wicked brand of technical, at times spacey, “proto-punk” brought an enthusiasm to the venue that might (if I were them) make one rethink retiring the band.

Anyway…if you’re in Winnipeg and you weren’t there you missed out. If you’re between Winnipeg and Halifax go see them, they’re coming to your town and they’re gonna rock.
